Shopping del Sol

Asunción, Paraguay
Shopping del Sol, the largest mall in Asunción, Paraguay, encompasses 180 stores and receives around 600,000 visitors per month. Because of the large volume of visitors and merchandise sold at the mall, maintaining a secure environment is a primary focus.

The establishment needed an expansion, which led to thinking about adapting the existing security solutions and integrating them with new ones according to the requirements of its new design. To achieve this goal, (Tyco Security Products, now part of Johnson Controls) was the best choice.

Introduction

The Shopping del Sol is the first shopping center in Paraguay, which is located in one of the main avenues of Asunción; and with the recent expansion to 49,000 m2 it becomes the main one in the city.

It is distributed on two levels with a fine design that integrates modern construction with natural spaces that enhance the exuberant environmental richness of the country, which attracts a large number of people every day.

With its 180 stores, Shopping del Sol saw the need to implement a state-of-the-art security system that would provide confidence to the more than 600,000 monthly visitors who come to this shopping, entertainment, and leisure location.

Taking these characteristics into account, security was a priority for the Shopping, which commissioned Keeper, the security system integrator based in Paraguay, to update and integrate this technology, so that the entire shopping center would be protected by solutions last generation.

Challenges

With the recent expansion of the Shopping del Sol facilities, its size doubled, which is why new security coverage was needed and it was essential to achieve integration with all existing solutions.

The previous system of the shopping center was composed of 4 DVRs Intellex DVMS of 16 channels, 10 PTZ cameras and 34 American Dynamics fixed cameras. Basically, the CCTV System worked separately from the other systems, and its functionality was not adequate to guarantee security in an establishment that was going to have that level of growth.

The main objective of the project was to establish the mechanism for the transition of the existing analog system, and based on Intellex for its future migration to IP. For this reason, this expansion was based on the victor platform, which allows both technologies to converge and facilitates the gradual migration from analog.

In addition, it was desired to integrate the fire area into the operation, implementing the graphic interface for it within victor and linking it with CCTV.

The parking area also had a considerable expansion, having a total of 1,600 spaces both in the front and in the back, which implied important challenges to achieve complete security in these spaces.

The solution

The expansion of Shopping del Sol required the integration of existing security solutions and readapting them for the needs of its new design.

"For this reason, we chose the Tyco Security Products brand from Johnson Controls," said Gabriel Giussani, general manager of Shopping del Sol. "We appreciate above all that it allowed us to integrate the new video surveillance systems with addressable and monitorable sensors with the systems we had originally mounted from cameras (also from the Tyco Security Products product portfolio), where we primarily relied.

Taking into account the requirements and needs of Shopping del Sol, victor was chosen as a system unifier, in order to preserve the Intellex DVR's that covered the oldest part of the shopping center with fixed and mobile cameras from American Dynamics, which was completed a few years ago. one year with Video Edge NVRS supporting Illustra cameras, and now integrated with 2 Exacq NVR's with a set of 200+ megapixel cameras mostly Illustra, complemented by Arecont 40 megapixel panoramic cameras in the parking lots.

Victor also made it possible to integrate the Simplex 4100ES Fire Detection Panel, which has expanded its initial 600 points to about 1,800 points of installed capacity. In turn, the panel has been expanded in capacity to cover the entire Mall, and the Carbon Monoxide detectors in the parking area have been connected to it.

The comfortable accesses as well as the vehicular accesses have been covered with megapixel cameras that are recorded in NVR's Exacq. The interior, with more than 180 stores of financial institutions, jewelry stores and stores of more than 60 top-level brands, are covered by high-quality cameras that allow efficient surveillance with high-resolution images.

During the expansion project, new digital cameras were incorporated, existing sections of the Shopping Center were also reinforced with digital technology, and everything was integrated naturally, without adaptation problems.

At the same time, a new monitoring room was also implemented that unifies all the existing analog with the new IP-based. This allows having a single central with a single monitoring tool that provides greater ease for the security operators of the Shopping.

“The way we decided to manage this project has to do with the history in which we have been working with Tyco Security Products and with its representatives in Paraguay, Keeper. The strength and technology strength of the products and solutions in the Tyco Security Products brand portfolio was the primary factor in the decision process,” said Giussani.

Security in the expanded Shopping center is centered on the monitoring room, which is cataloged as a model in Paraguay. Previously, the security of the Shopping was based mainly on human resources that were physically present in the shopping center and the video surveillance was simply a reinforcement. Today, however, the heart is the monitoring room that is complemented by human resources to take immediate action in the event of an incident.

"This was a very big challenge for us," said Graciela Trinidad de Medal, president of Keeper. “It allowed us to combine the best solutions, revitalizing the existing infrastructure according to the requirements of a modern shopping center, opening up a range of possibilities to integrate new technologies into the contracted security solution, and gaining the trust and respect of the client for future ventures. .”

The future

The project has been designed to provide excellent management in the operation of security systems, selecting victor as a platform to integrate the existing and anticipate future growth, both in equipment and in software implementations such as analytical video.

In the short term, it is planned to implement an access control system that integrates with victor and manages all the security of the mall.

As a goal of the project, Shopping del Sol aims to have an absolute security system in all aspects: fire, detection and monitoring, thus achieving total integrated control of all spaces, which makes it a great challenge for the size of the establishment.
